NAACP Steps up its Tech Game with Annual Convention App and Social Networking Site

NAACT (National Association for the Advancement of Colored Technology)

An Atlanta Post Report

Let’s face it, more recent generations view the NAACP as their parent’s organization. The organization took a step in the right direction by appointing Ben Jealous (its youngest CEO ever) several years ago. Realizing that a large portion of 20 and early 30 somethings are heavy into social media and mobile content consumption, the organization has hit the ground running by creating a mobile app specifically for this year’s NAACP Annual Convention and unveiling its brand new social networking site that’s geared towards students and young activists.

The 2011 Annual NAACP Convention takes place July 23-28 in Los Angeles, and the cross-platform convention app was created to be a “complete resource for attendees” and includes features like a detailed schedule and map, to a directory of staff & speakers, to the ability for attendees to share convention content via Twitter and Facebook using the #NAACPLA11 hashtag so the non-attendees can follow along virtually. Attendees and those who want to follow along can also visit the NAACP Getting Social page and check out the different ways the organization will be using social media specifically for this year’s convention.

New MacBook Air Challenges the Idea of a Mobile Device

The future of the mobile device too?

A Small Biz Go Mobile Report

We can all agree that whole idea behind a laptop is the notion that you can work from anywhere…including your lap (but I would keep an eye on the heat if you’re planning on having children). As long as you have an internet connection, you can do the same things on a laptop that you can using a full desktop computer, but just in a smaller package. I have never really thought of a laptop as a mobile device…until today when Apple released its newest version of the ultra-portable and ultra-advanced MacBook Air.

The reason why I excluded a laptop from the mobile device category was because even at their current smaller sizes, they are still kind of a pain to lug around. Additionally, with their longer than RIGHT NOW boot up times, and not-so-long battery life, I would much rather browse my favorite websites, check Twitter & Facebook, and send a couple of emails using my smartphone or tablet. I am assuming Apple took that to heart when refreshing and upgrading the new MacBook Air.

GM Pimps out OnStar with Rear-view Mirror Add-On Device for Non-GM Cars

Got a Toyota? OnStar STILL has you covered!

I KNEW this was coming. Now I can finally call someone (who cares) and say “I knew GM would let non-GM cars use OnStar”

The OnStar FMV Mirror costs $300 bucks retail, $75 to install, and will run about $20 bucks per month to keep you and/or your family connected to the nice men and women who answer your OnStar calls about everything from how do I find the nearest “Mickey Dees” (if just driving for about 5 minutes in any direction isn’t good enough), to serious auto crash response notifications (those TV and radio commercials are powerful).

I think this is a VERY smart move for GM. The Tech family drives a Chevy SUV and since I forgot to cancel the free trial period I’ve found it is very convenient (and safe) actually talking to a live person versus trying to punch in an address using the in dash navigation while flying down the interstate (I got one of those aftermarket jawns). Additionally, knowing that somebody is “watching over me” if an emergency were to ever happen does give me piece of mind…especially when I peek in the backseat at my two Angels fast asleep in their car seats – Because I will go crazy if I have to listen to Dora the Explorer blasting over the Rear Entertainment System one more time.

The OnStar FMV Mirror hits Best Buy Shelves on July 24 with pre-orders starting now. Check to see if your car qualifies HERE

iPhone 5 Experiment – From Just being 1st in Line to a Marketable Campaign

Rob's iPhone 5 Experiment Swag

You know the type, the uber-geek who pitches a tent and camps out for hours or even days to be the 1st to get [insert the MUST HAVE gadget of the year week here]. The iPhone 5 (or 4s…or whatever Apple is gonna call it) will be no exception as fan-boys/girls, techies, nerds, and hipsters are already scouring the web to find out when the device may release so they can get their camping gear ready.

Unlike the other early adopters willing to call-in sick or use up their remaining vacation balance just for bragging rights, Rob Shoesmith (garbage man turned mobile app developer) has other plans. He feels that Apple product releases are an event in and of themselves. So he has devised a plan that started as a gimmick to get companies to donate gear that will help him “survive the elements” while he waits for the new Apple smartphone, that has quickly spawned into a full-on marketing campaign that has already received global attention…and more gear than he knows what to do with.
