This Labor Day weekend, i’m sure some of you will NOT use this holiday as a last chance to throw some cow, pig, or chicken on the grill. Some of you will actually try to eat out. Go Luck, because you will NOT be the only person to opt on this game plan. As a result, you will be stuck at the bar while holding one of those flashy things that buzz to let you know when there is a table available.

If so, do the rest of us who haven’t left the house yet a favor and download the WaitList app and let us know how long the wait time for the restaurant you are in.

That is the core essence of this app. The users of the app are the administrators as it’s up to them to log what restaurant they are at and how long the wait time is per the restaurant host(ess). Those of us who are looking to eat there can open up WaitList and see your log of how long the wait is.

Talk about making use of the iPad’s screen! The Official Twitter iPad app takes just about every Twitter function and gives it to you on the iPad.

The Twitter iPad app does it via panes overlapping each other to dig deep into Twitter to handle just about any task you can do using Twitter. With other iPad Twitter clients, there was only so much information you could view on the screen before you were taken out of the current screen and into another.

So I rewind and pause my DVR so I could first snap a pic of the code with my smartphone, then use my QR code reader that’s secretly built into my BlackBerry Messenger App, to scan the code.

The code takes you to a mobile site of the new show “Lone Star” where you can find out more information about the show, look at pics and even videos, all from your smartphone, provided you have a QR Code reader app on your smartphone – which if you don’t, click here for more info. If you do have one and you’re itching to try it out, scan the image in this article.

That’s just one of the ways you can use QR Codes to attract folks who are more likely to whip out their smartphones to browse the web rather than wait for their desktop/laptop to boot up.

I have been talking about mobile barcode technology to death. It’s just nice to see it actually in the wild for a change.

Remember those tiny credit/debit cards you could attach to your keychain and wave over a POS (Point Of Sale) terminal at a cashier station or at a gas tank and automatically pay for items?

Well imagine waving your smartphone over the same terminal and paying for items from your credit card or directly from your bank account? Contactless payments may not be too far off as Visa is testing that exact same technology with the help of Bank of America and other technology makers.

Well that time is upon us with the new Shopkick App that promises a new shopping experience. Available on iPhone and Android mobile devices, the ShopKick app will ping your phone with points, discounts, and rewards for just shopping. It sounds like it is similar to current geo-location apps like Foursquare, Gowalla, and MyTown, but it’s very different as well.

The Lowdown:

With ShopKick, you don’t have to “check-in” to places in order to see specials. Stores with the ShopKick equipment installed in their stores will be able to send specials to your phone based on where you are in the store and what you are doing. So If you are near the store, you will get a “kick”, if you enter a specific isle, or department, you will get a “kick” as well as trying on clothes and actually buying items.

So far, Macy’s, Best Buy, American Eagle Outfitters, Sports Authority, as well as the Simon Property Group (they own the majority of malls in the U.S.) have installed to equipment that sends a specific frequency to your phone and waits for the bounce-back to determine where you are (like radar).

No of course, that means the store will know where you are at all times with the ShopKick app installed, so you will have to decide how much your privacy means to you when you are shopping. The workaround is you have to turn on the app for the notifications to start. So if you don’t want you phone going off every time you do something different while in a store, you can close the app.

A Brotha’s Take:

I think its cool (not just because Best Buy signed on) because technology is getting smarter. With the majority of Americans using mobile devices like smartphones to handle more and more tasks, I think it’s only natural to be able to use our devices to find the best deals or rack up rewards points ON THE SPOT. Since I don’t plan ahead and clip coupons when I shop, it would be cool for my phone to buzz to let me know I could get a special deal on something I was gonna buy anyway.

If you’re not familiar with QR Code (Quick-Response Code), I’ll give you the background. It’s essentially a mobile barcode that you can encrypt with any type of information. Contact info, calendar appointments, even URL’s can be encoded via QR code for mobile devices to “scan” and decrypt the information. It’s a very quick way to pass along information to anybody using a mobile device.
