Netflix iPad App is Real; Hulu in the Works – CE Pro

April 2nd, 2010 // 10:34 am @ Terrance Gaines

How many times can Netflix (r)evolutionize movie watching? We thought the rent-by-mail with no late fees was cool. So was being able to stream to your Blu-ray player and gaming console.

Now it appears you’ll be able to marry you’re brand spanking new iPad with Netflix for a movie-viewing love fest on the portable device’s 9.7-inch screen.

The free Netflix iPad app was released on April 1 and doesn’t appear to be an April Fool’s joke.

It appears to have some pretty nifty features to basically mimic your experience of the Watch Instantly for your PC, like being able to browse and manage your queue and even pick up on the iPad where you may have left off watching in the living room.

Here’s how the Application Description reads:

Get Netflix on your iPad. Just download this free app and you can instantly watch TV shows & movies streaming from Netflix.
-Watch as often as you want
-It’s part of your Netflix unlimited membership
-Resume watching where you left off on your TV or computer
-Browse movies and manage your Queue right from your iPad

And the app is rated 12+, obviously, because we’re not all watching Disney cartoons.

So is this the so-called killer app? Thousands of movies and TV shows in the palm of your hands, on a much nicer screen than what an iPhone/iPod touch can offer?

According to Slashfilm.com, ABC also has an app so you can watch the broadcast network’s streaming episodes, and The New York Times reports Hulu is also planning on unleashing an iPad app. That certainly would be huge, but apparently might also be tied into Hulu’s testing the paid subscription waters. Still, we’re guessing plenty of people would throw in a few bucks a month to access Hulu, especially if they’re able to right from their iPad.

Fandango Begins Rolling Out Paperless Mobile Tickets

March 15th, 2010 // 10:37 am @ Terrance Gaines

Waiting in line for movie tickets is still the worst part of going to the movies (unless you are going to see The Bounty Hunter). With so many mobile phone movie apps, it’s easy to find what’s playing at nearby theaters and even purchase tickets right from your mobile phone, but then you still have to get a paper ticket from the dispenser or the ticket agent. But your ticket could easily be delivered to your mobile phone via a 2D barcode.

Today, Fandango

is launching a mobile ticket program in eight cities which lets moviegoers finally go paperless. Your ticket is delivered to your mobile phone in the form a of a 2D barcode, or QR code, which the ticket-takers can scan. Movie theaters need to equip their attendees with special scanners, which is why it is only available in a few markets. (MovieTickets.com is testing

a similar program).

Here are the theaters participating in Fandango’s initial rollout:

  • New York: City Cinemas 1, 2 & 3, Angelika Film Center, East 86th Street Cinemas, Village East Cinema, Beekman Theatre, The Paris Theatre.
  • New Jersey: Manville 12 Plex.
  • Houston: Angelika Film Center.
  • Dallas/Plano: Angelika Dallas; Angelika Plano.
  • San Diego: La Mesa Grossmont Center, Clairemont Town Square Stadium.
  • Bakersfield: Valley Plaza 16.
  • Sonoma County: Rohnert Park 16.
  • Hawaii: Ward Stadium, Kahala Theater, Kapolei 16, Mililani Stadium.

HD DVD to Blu-ray Swap Program

August 19th, 2009 // 1:01 pm @ Terrance Gaines

hd dvd,blu-ray

For those self-proclaimed “early adopters” and others who had no clue what was going on…all they knew was “I wanted it” who jumped the gun and ran out and bought HD DVD movies without waiting to see who won the DVD format war, there is a chance for you to save yourself and your pride and get rid of those HD DVDs sitting in a closet collecting dust.

Side note: Now Brotha Tech is one of those self-proclaimed early adopters, but my affinity for all things Sony and my daughter (we were stashing money away for her arrival around the same time the format war was at it’s paramount) saved me from jumping on the HD DVD bandwagon.

The Lowdown:

Warner Bros. has a program that will allow you to swap HD DVD’s for Blu-ray Discs. The program is called Red2Blu and at $4.95 per title and $6.95 for shipping(there is always a catch, albeit a nominal one), you send in your front and back cover art, wait a couple of weeks (tracking number included), and Voila’ your brand-new Blu-ray disc is ready for viewing.

Of course, it isn’t THAT easy, but not terribly complicated either. Just go to Red2Blu.com and select the HD DVD’s you want to trade in. You will receive a confirmation email and a pre-paid postage label. Only one swap per title is allowed and 25 per household. There is a possibility that the title you want to swap is not available; but on the flip side, there might be a deluxe edition title in Blu-ray available for your plain-old HD DVD edition (no extra cost).

In the end, sometimes waiting for the dust to settle is a good thing. But if you’re like me, and dust hitting the groud takes too long, it’s nice to know there are options if your obsessive posessive disorder or O.P.D. (I just made that up, I think) wins over rational, logical thinking.
