Just a year after HP bought Palm solely to keep the WebOS mobile platform alive (it actually had potential), HP has recently announced that it will discontinue operations for its WebOS lineup, and that the company will continue to explore options to optimize the value of WebOS software going forward.
In other words, it’s pretty much lights out for the WebOS mobile platform. Not sure what HP will do with Palm altogether, but it’s obvious, with HP’s recent acquisition of Autonomy Corp. (primarily makes search engines that help companies find vital information stored across computer networks), it plans to expand its line-up of business software products and steer clear of consumer electronics.
Poor, poor WebOS. You tried, you really, really tried. Unfortunately, the mobile platform game is lock-tight right now and slowly but surely it’s squeezing out ANY players who aren’t ALL IN with their campaigns to stay competitive in the mobile space.
